Little Rock Things to Do!

by JB on Mar 28, 2009 at 6:10 PM Filed in Staying on the Right Path

If you are an outdoor enthusiast looking for things to do while visiting the Little Rock area, this is something you have GOT to do! JB took us on a fun-filled, relaxing trip around Lake Maumelle (about 30 minutes west of Little Rock.) We enjoyed every minute of it. JB has a unique brand of 'redneck' humor but at the same time, he's a true southern gentleman. He's kind of a cross between Larry the Cable Guy, Billy Bob Thornton, and Uncle Jed Clampett. We saw a variety of wildlife on our excursion and caught an awesome sunset. We highly recommend the trip! You will enjoy the ride. P.S. Don't worry if you forget your camera. JB has his own camera and takes lots of pictures of the trip. He will email them at no charge or for $10 he will make a great-looking slide show with music and everything.  I highly recommend this trip!!!  A+++++    Bob & Belinda Bellamy, Ft. Worth, TX

A great fishing trip with Little Rock fishing guide!

by JB on Mar 19, 2009 at 6:01 PM Filed in

What a great fishing experience! J.B. had everything ready when we hit the dock. Talkin' bout hospitality. Hot coffee, pigs in a blanket, honey buns and a big warm smile that says "we going to have a good day on the lake". We caught fish in four of the five holes he put us on. Fresh fish for dinner is hard to beat. Two father and son teams created a lasting fishing memory today.

"It's always fishing season!" says Little Rock Fishing Guide

by JB on Nov 18, 2008 at 4:35 PM Filed in Staying on the Right Path | Teach Your Children Well

The Good Book tells us that we are only here for a season. Every chance you get, enjoy the season. Hug your kids as much as possible. Tell them you love them more. Take a friend to lunch and then pick up the tab! Savor a sunset with your better half. Do a random act of kindness. Go fishing with JB. Send someone fishing with JB! They will thank you. Forget about the things you can't control and enjoy the rest of your season!

A nice testimonial...

by JB on Oct 28, 2008 at 7:03 PM Filed in

Wow!  What a deal!  You would not believe how easy JB made our trip.  From the second we walked up to the boat & he had hot coffee to cleaning every fish & bagging them!  It was a very unique experience that all really enjoyed.  I was surprised that my son told him he'd now re-discovered his love for fishing. I was really happy to hear that w/ all the fish-less trips I've drug him to.  At any rate -  thanks for letting us know about it & I'll definitely spread the word along w/ my friend who went who said he'll do the same.

Fising in Freshwater Lakes & Ponds

by Todd on Jun 25, 2008 at 12:35 PM Filed in Bass Basics | Crappie 101

Lakes and ponds are great places for fish to live. They produce abundant plant food and offer plenty of cover for fish to hide. Shoreline structures like docks, logs, stumps, brush and rocks provide shelter, shade and protection for fish. Which means they also provide great fishing opportunities for the anxious angler.

You can fish lakes and ponds from the shore or from a boat. You can find fish in shallow or deep water, in open water or near natural or man-made structures. In lakes, you can catch freshwater fish like largemouth and smallmouth bass, pike, pickerel, perch, panfish, trout, even salmon.

Get to know your lake structure. Points, inlets, holes, sunken islands, dams, submerged objects (manmade or natural) and reeds and weeds are all considered structure. You should always fish in and around structure. It's a simple formula.

Batter-Fried Panfish

by Todd on Jun 25, 2008 at 12:30 PM Filed in
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 egg white
  • Approximately 1 pound panfish fillets
  • Oil for deep frying

Combine the flour, cornstarch, pepper and salt and sift together onto a plate or piece of waxed paper.  Beat the egg yolk and water to a smooth cream then incorporate the flour mixture a few tablespoons at a time.Just before using the batter, beat the egg white until stiff enough to stand in peaks when lifted on the beater.  Scoop the egg white into the batter and fold it gently with a spoon or spatula. Heat the oil in a deep heavy pan.

Pat the fish fillets dry with paper towel.Pick up fillets with tongs and dip into batter and carefully drop into the hot oil. Deep fry for four to five minutes, turn them as they brown. This will require about three minutes. After they brown, transfer the fillets to paper towel or a brown paper bag to drain excess oil. Arrange fillets on warm platter and serve at once accompanied with wedges of lemon.

Fishing Cliffs and Steep Shore Banks

by Todd on Jun 25, 2008 at 10:13 AM Filed in
A shear cliff or bank that goes straight down into deep water provides no structure, break line or gradual path to deeper water. So it doesn't attract fish. On the other hand, a cliff or bank that has an underwater shelf or slopes gradually toward deeper water does attract fish. You should also look for crumbled-off rock at the underwater base of sharp cliffs. Deep-water fish may be attracted to these rocks for food or spawning.

Winter Fishing

by JB on Feb 14, 2008 at 6:53 PM Filed in Crappie 101

If you can’t stand the cold, stay off the lake! You know it’s cold when you have to keep thumping the eyes on your fishing rod. It’s hard to get the line through when the eyes freeze up.  A word to the wise: wear your Redhead Wool socks and your LightHouse for the Blind long johns. And bring some Hot Hands. Winter fishing in Arkansas is not for the faint of heart. That’s the bad news. The good news is -it is easier to catch a limit of crappie in the winter than it is during any other season. You just have to get down to their level – and I do.

JB's Guide Service is Open for Business

by JB on Jan 1, 2008 at 11:23 AM Filed in Cast Your Cares

Or, as JB likes to say "Open for Bidness."  He proudly says, “my bidness is fishing and bidness is gooooood!”  The line might not be original, but JB sure is. Retired after 20 years on the Little Rock Fire Department, JB makes fishing his full-time hobby.

JB offers  fishing trips to anyone who wants to get away from the world for a while and "cast their cares" away.   He  provides clients with an opportunity to forget about work, or school, or sickness or any other problem and just enjoy themselves for a moment, because we’re only here for a moment.

JB's office is located on a fishing barge at Lake Maumelle just outside of Little Rock, Arkansas.  His office hours are “from first light ‘til last bite!”

JB’s Fishing Tips

With more than 40 years of experience in recreational sport fishing in "The Natural State," JB has developed systems, methodologies and philosophies for just about every fishing situation.

In his blog, JB shares what he has learned over the years. He talks about what works and what doesn’t. There’s a lot of gimmicks out there. Don’t be fooled by lofty advertising promises of how to catch more and bigger fish. Experience is the best teacher.
